Ordinary finds

From the latest hit to the wisdom of old...

“He wishes he had never entered the funhouse. But he has. Then he wishes he were dead. But he’s not. Therefore he will construct funhouses for others and be their secret operator — though he would rather be among the lovers for whom funhouses are designed.” ― John Barth, Lost in the Funhouse , 1968

John Barth (b. May 27, 1930) is the undisputed king of introverted postmodernism. His games of narration and metafictional framebreaking are entertaining, but to his contemporaries often seemed maddening and pointless. Story cycles such as Chimera experiment with what I call ‘mythographic metafiction’, discussing the role of myth and the representation thereof…

Drummer, vocalist (and multi-instrumentalist) of the seminal rock-group The Band, Levon Helm should have turned 72 today. Sadly he passed away last month…

Helm was known for his deeply soulful, country-style voice, and powerful drumming style - highlighted on many of the The Band’s recordings, such as “The Weight”, “Up on Cripple Creek”, “Ophelia” and “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down”…
