Nov. 7, 1879 was the birthday of Lev Bronstein - better known as Leon Trotsky, the Russian revolutionary who fell out with the Party after Lenin’s death in 1924. Trotsky was first sent to Alma Ata, then forced into foreign exile. He settled in Turkey, then, in rapid succession, France, Norway and Mexico, where assassins got to him in 1940…
Having survived the first attempt on his life in May, Trotsky was less fortunate on August 20, when a Mexican Stalinist drove an ice-pick into his brain. Trotsky clung on another whole day before dying from his injuries.
