July 24, 1911 – Hiram Bingham III re-discovers Machu Picchu, “the Lost City of the Incas” - which had never actually been lost, and which he didn’t actually ‘re-discover’ - but he did remove a lot of archaeological artifacts and take a lot of photographs of the site…
